Frequently Asked
Questions
How did you come up with the idea of
wood hats, shoes and purses?
Our technique for creating and carving the wood
hats evolved over a period of years into the pieces shown here. We first
worked as jewelers, carving in wax and precious metals with flexible shaft
power tools. We realized with some modifications that we could carve larger
sculptural wood pieces using the same technique. We wanted to carve
something different, changing an every day item into a work of art. We
enjoyed carving pieces that looked like fabric. We realized that hats
offered an unlimited canvas for our creative expression.
How do I take care of the wood hat,
shoe, purse or
stone flower?
To clean a hat we use a soft clean cloth to
wipe down the open areas of the hats, and a soft feather duster to remove
any dust from the flowers and recessed areas. The hats are finished with a
"Danish Oil". We feel that any "Danish Oil" can be used
for a touch up. Make sure that the oil is colorless and is called Natural.
Use a clean piece of cloth and only dampen it with the smallest amount of
oil and lightly wipe the hat. Wipe off any extra oil. Be careful around any
flower petals. The Holly flowers should not be oiled, you don’t want to
accidentally color or stain them. The Vera flowers or leaves should not be
oiled, as the natural wood patina color will bleed into the surrounding
woods. We do not recommend displaying the hat in direct sun light or where
it will be subjected to extreme temperature or humidity changes. The
Alabaster flowers need only to be dusted with a soft feather duster. No
additional finish should be applied.
How do I hang the hat?
We have added a wire to the back of most hats, so they can hang on a picture
hook.
Can I hang this hat on an outside door?
The hats are NOT made for
the outdoors. Direct sun light and extreme temperature changes will damage
the hat.
Are they turned on a lathe? Do you bend
the wood? Do you use one solid piece of wood?
The hats are CARVED out
of many pieces of wood. We CARVE the cap, band
and brim separately and then assemble it. Each flower petal is a single CARVED
piece and then we glue them together to make the flower.
How long does it take to carve
a
hat?
Each hat varies, it can take a week or it can take a
month, sometimes longer.
